LGA Lib Dem Group Leader Gerald Vernon Jackson is encouraging Lib Dem councillors who have twitter accounts to support the LGA in raising the profile of local councils in England and Wales and the hard work you do locally as Liberal Democrat Councillors in your wards. It’s also a good opportunity for you to use social media to let communities know the extent and breadth of the work councils undertake.

This year #OurDay, the day when we ask people working in local government to tweet about what they’re doing to serve their community, is taking place on 26 November. Last year’s #OurDay saw over 3,500 people participating on twitter, sending more than 11,000 tweets.

This year, the LGA have produced a toolkit for councils and are working with stakeholders to make sure as many areas of local government as possible are represented. If you tweet, either from a personal account or a work account, please do get involved and encourage your contacts in #localgov to get involved too. More information below:

Councillors and local authority staff will be taking part in a tweetathon on Wednesday (November 26) to help bring to life the hundreds of vital services provided by councils across England and Wales.

They will be among thousands nationwide to tweet using the hashtag #OurDay to give residents an insight into the huge variety of jobs councils do every day, from collecting rubbish and fixing roads, to taking care of vulnerable people.

During #OurDay last year there were 11,000 tweets from 3,500 contributors, reaching three million people.

#OurDay has been organised by the Local Government Association (LGA), which represents nearly 400 councils in England and Wales, and the Knowledge Hub. The LGA is encouraging as many councillors and local authority staff as possible to take a couple of minutes out of their day to tell the world what they’re up to as part of a 24-hour live tweetathon, from 00.01 on Wednesday, by using the hashtag #OurDay and please copy in our twitter account – @libdemlocalgov.
