Local Elections 2027: Let’s keep winning

The local elections in 2026 were the eighth in a row in which the Lib Dems moved forwards. Gaining more seats, and running more councils. We took control of several new councils in May. Including brand new authorities in East and West Surrey. We also gained enough seats to take minority control of some of Britain’s largest councils – such as Birmingham and Newcastle.

Keeping the momentum going

The next set of local elections in May 2027 are enormous. Because of the governments u-turns on local government reorganisation – a huge set of district elections are taking place that we were not expecting to fight in England – and of course every single seat is up for election in Scotland and Wales. Over 10,000 principal council seats are up for election next year. We are defending 1699 – but Labour and the Conservatives are defending a lot more. The ailing SNP and Green Party are also defending hundreds of seats. There is a great opportunity for us to make big gains in May.

ALDC’s Local Election Appeal is a funding stream set up to directly support local elections candidates working hard to win. It will support extra literature being posted to key voters in key target wards – with a strong focus on Lib Dem gains and helping candidates from groups under-represented in local government.

This year we want to raise enough funds to win 60 extra wards. These will all be new Lib Dem gains. We are going for 60 as next year is also ALDC’s 6oth anniversary. In razor-thin contests, your contribution might very well tip the balance.
