White Ribbon Day is coming up on 25 November 2026.
White Ribbon Day is a national campaign, held on 25 November each year, where thousands of people come together to raise awareness of preventing gender-based violence and what it takes to challenge it.
The template council motion below is taken from the White Ribbon Councillor Pack. It would be a good motion to raise in November’s full council meeting to commit your council to supporting White Ribbon Day and it’s year round awareness raising of violence against women and girls.
This council notes that White Ribbon Day, on 25 November, is a day when people across England
and Wales come together to raise awareness of preventing gender-based violence and what needs to be done to challenge it.
This council believes that violence against women and girls doesn’t come out of nowhere and that the root causes of men’s violence against women and girls are harmful attitudes, behaviours and systems built upon damaging gender norms and narratives of masculinity.
This council believes everyone has a part to play in preventing violence against women and girls. It takes all of us to build a society that is free from violence and abuse. We as local decision-makers have a key role in developing and promoting policies that address and prevent gender-based violence and lead by example in our communities.
This council calls upon all members to:
- Mark White Ribbon Day publicly by wearing White Ribbons on 25 November.
- Challenge harmful content and comments you see and hear that contribute to violence against women and girls.
- Encourage councillors and staff to make the White Ribbon promise to never use, excuse or remail silent about men’s violence against women.
- Work with local schools, businesses and community groups to raise awareness of challenging everyday sexism and harmful narratives of masculinity.
- Collaborate with local organisations and charities in the area who are working to prevent violence against women and girls.
- Take a whole society approach to tackle violence against women and girls and ensure that the prevention of violence against women and girls is reflected across all council department policies and strategies.
