At the beginning of November we talked about getting your messages right. About thinking them through with colleagues and recording them on a messaging grid. Step 2 was then to make sure that you then repeated those messages in all your communications with the electorate between now and polling day.
A useful exercise to go through in this process is to take a map of your ward and prepare a draft “Record of action” leaflet. If you’ve not seen one before here’s an article about how we do them.
Perhaps use post-it notes if the map is large enough. What you need to do is record which campaigns and “public” casework issues you have, and map them with arrows accross the ward. This can be done online on using google maps as well ( the Labour party often does this).
Try to think of the biggest, most persuasive issues for each area, and avoid personal casework. So for example sorting out pothole problems would be fine, sorting out benefit issues for a resident would not.
The best issues here are those medium sized issues that a lot of people will care about eg fighting to save or gain a public facility such as a school, lollipop lady, better road junction, planning and liscensing issues etc.
When you’ve finished the mapping process you need to:
a) look at where the populated gaps are. You’ve got six months to fill them. You want good issues for each part of your ward. Think through how your going to find and campaign on issues in those areas. Perhaps a quick phone survey might help identify somthing that conecerns local residents?
b) make sure you’ve got good photos for each issue that you have identified so that when you actually produce you Record of Action leaflet you’re not scrabbling around. Get the photos taken and banked now so that you can use them in lots of literature in the months to come.
It’s important that everybody accross your ward gets a powerful message.
