Delegates for the Bournemouth Federal Conference should recently have been sent the Party’s training programme, but just to highlight some of the opportunities for Councillors in Bournemouth.
Once again we are working with our colleagues in the IDeA (Improvement and Development Agency) to bring you some very high quality training.
We have two special half day sessions (3.5 hours) to enable us to give a more detailed level of training:
- Saturday 13 September 2008 (am) - “Being an Effective Ward Councillor”
- Sunday 14 September 2008 (am) – “Successful Scrutiny – making scrutiny work for you”
Other training for Councillors in Bournemouth includes:
- Town and Parish Councils
- Effective Small Groups
- Beyond Surgeries
- Group Cohesion and Management
- Casework
- Running an Effective Away Day
- Councillors Online (websites)
- Political Support Officers.
Full details of the training programme will be circulated in September, and will be available online at the ALDC website.

Dates for your diaries - we have a packed campaigner training programme set for Bournemouth with 16 sessions focussing on “Essential Campaign Skills” and “Winning in 2009 and 2010". If you are available in Bournemouth on the Saturday (13th September) you might be interested in our full day workshop on using Page Plus (the Party's recommended DTP software). This will be an interactive session – so bring your laptops!
On Saturday afternoon there is a special half day session on “Voter ID and Knocking on Doors”. Again this will be an interactive session aimed at improving how we contact voters.

On Wednesday 27th August the LGA Liberal Democrat Group are organising a LGA specialist Conference Seminar on Culture, Tourism and Sport for Liberal Democrat councillors.
This is the best place for all those who are involved to discuss key tourism and culture issues in the Olympic year - controversial and powerful these topics will get a real airing amongst fellow elected Liberal Democrats. This looks to be one of the best conference available this year - this email is to urge you to book yourself in.
The conference is in the World Heritage City of Bath that will enable us to discuss relevent topics with on hand illustrations, learn lessons where appropriate and also include the local MP and Liberal Democrat front-bench spokesperson Don Foster MP. Topics to be covered will be as varied as licensing, libraries, use of culture and history within a community, sport and leisure as well as the wider national debates on funding. This will be a real chance to influence the national perspective and discuss this with the front bench team in parliament as well as your national team in local government Cllrs Chris White, Paul Massey, Alan Gloak and Paul Crossley.
There will be an overnight option on Tuesday 26th August and we will have an appropriate function that evening to welcome delegates, so please do indicate when you book if you would like details of the hotel arrangements. It is expected that the hotel will be approximately £80. Confirmation will be available this week.
This is an LGA activity and our experience of the last three years is that local authorities have been able to support councillors registration (£25), travel and hotel costs. If you encounter any difficulty on this please do contact this office.
Registrations should be booked via email to Evelyn Mark on evelyn.mark@lga.gov.uk and we will then email back an invoice. Please do BOOK TODAY.

Earlier today Nick Clegg gave a major speech to the Local Government Association on giving power to people and communities:
"I am drawn to the philosophy of decentralisation and local empowerment for many reasons. There's the basic principle of subsidiarity - the liberal belief that decisions just ought to be taken as close to the people they affect as possible.
"But it's more than that. Centralised government simply doesn't work to deliver the change I want for Britain. It doesn't improve services fast enough. And it certainly doesn't deliver fairer outcomes – where everybody gets opportunities no matter their background.
"If the New Labour decade has taught us anything – this is surely it. The great experiment of trying to improve our public services for everyone by pouring money in through a tight funnel in Number 10 Downing Street has failed.
"And there's now no more money to put in. So it's time to think about how we improve our public services – not just how much we spend on them. And the biggest 'how' of all is decentralisation."
You can read the rest of Nick's speech - including his proposals to turn these ideas into specific action - on the Party's website.
