Liberal Democrats now hold either the leadership or deputy leadership of over 90 principal councils across England, Scotland and Wales.
Following the 2026 local elections, we gained full control of councils such as Portsmouth, Stockport, and we won control of brand new councils (currently shadow-authorities) in East Surrey and West Surrey.
We have since formed some historic administrations on a number of new councils. Birmingham, Newcastle and Milton Keynes now have Liberal Democrat leaders. We have joined many more administrations.
We have updated the Lib Dem Councils page of our website to show all Liberal Democrat council leaders and deputy leaders – stretching from Aberdeen to Cornwall.
This list just shows our council leaders and deputies – there are many more councils in which we form part of a joint administration. Overall we are providing leadership in over 100 councils following 8 years of continuous growth in local government.
