Researcher for main opposition leader on Oldham Council

Our current Researcher will be headed to sunny climes to complete a year of academic study from July.

We are seeking a special person to step up to take his place whilst he is away. This will represent an exciting twelve-month posting in which you could really make your mark in local government.

The Liberal Democrat Group, under long-standing Leader of the Opposition Councillor Howard Sykes MBE, is both dynamic and effective, frequently proposing new policy initiatives to Council and challenging the Labour Administration for its shortcomings.  Howard is also Liberal Democrat Leader and Vice Chair of the Local Government Association.

The role of the Researcher will be to support the Leader and his Group colleagues to be effective in opposition by carrying out a wide range of challenging tasks, including conducting research, writing up motions and questions on topical issues to be put before meetings of the full Council, drafting speeches, creating insightful press releases, and writing to government ministers.

The role calls for a pro-active, hard-working and politically-conscious individual, who shares the values and aspirations of the Oldham Liberal Democrat Group.

Although part-time the role will at times be full-on, with the additional potential reward of seeing your ideas for new policies adopted into practice.  Subject to certain constraints on attendance in the run-up to Council meetings, there is considerable flexibility around the pattern of hours worked.

Consequently, the job role could potentially suit a councillor busy with a local authority elsewhere or a student, carer, someone semi-retired.  If you are not flexible, or if you are a clock watcher or plodder, this is NOT the job for you.

Please drop us a brief email, explaining why you might be suitable and what you would bring to this role, along with full contact details (including a phone number), to:

The existing post-holder, Richard Outram, at richard.outram2@oldham.gov.uk or Councillor Howard Sykes, at howard.sykes@oldham.gov.uk.

Please note that you will be required to submit a formal application, via the Oldham Council procedure, so you should look closely at the associated documents for more details. The closing date is 9 June.
