There was one hold and one loss for the Liberal Democrats in principal council by-elections last week. The party successfully held it’s seat in Clifton and Maidenway ward in Torbay (UA), as former  local MP Adrian Sanders secured an impressive 26.5% swing from the Conservatives to take victory with 69.2% of votes cast.

However, the party could not it’s seat in Huntly, Strathbogie and Alford ward in Aberdeenshire (UA), despite an increase in it’s share of the first preferences from two years ago. The Conservatives made the gain, topping the first preferences, with the SNP successfully holding their seat in second place.

Four principal council by-elections will take place this Thursday. Beverly Baker and Graham Winter will be the Liberal Democrats candidates in contests in Shropshire (UA) and Dorset (CC), with the party not represented in the contests in Bridgend (UA) and Conwy (UA).
