LGA Liberal Democrats have been calling for further devolution of powers to England following the promise of further devolution to Scotland, but have warned it must be up to local people to choose how their areas are then governed.

Speaking as Nick Clegg launched a new report from the Institute for Public Policy Research on decentralising power in England, Gerald Vernon Jackson, LGA Lib Dem Group Leader, said:

‘We should welcome the report but make sure that this applies to all local areas of England who want more powers. And if the government is serious about devolution then it should not lecture councils about how they should then organise their democratic leadership. It should be up to the people living in those areas to make that decision.’
