Winning the Watford Way
As this booklet reveals, Watford’s team have had their highs and lows and there have been many lessons learned. Baroness Sal Brinton’s own two parliamentary campaigns were not without their difficult points – from being reported to Special Branch, to offensive anonymous leaflets and criminal damage to our supporters’ property, all of which was part of a campaign of harassment and intimidation which resulted in the Conservative candidate being reported to the police and convicted. This did not deter the Watford team from campaigning.
33 years of Liberal Democracy in Sutton
Sutton Council’s system of Local Area Committees plays a very important role, transferring local decision-making back to the areas that councillors represent. It’s fair to say that the Liberal Democrats in the London Borough of Sutton know something about winning elections! In the last three decades they’ve won all nine ‘all out’ council elections – five of them with over 80 per cent of the council seats. But winning has always been only the means to the end, not the end in itself. They want to win because they’re Liberal Democrats, and they want to show people what a good Liberal Democrat government looks like in action, not just in words. Their ‘end’ is a truly Liberal society; their means is a good Liberal Democrat council.
Liverpool- A study of Liberal Fortitude
Richard Kemp’s ‘history’ of what has been the most successful Liberal and then Liberal Democrat Urban Group in the last half of the last century and the first decade of this century: the Liverpool Lib Dems. In this City they not only invented community politics but have consistently delivered liberal policies and have kept themselves in a position where they could control or influence the city’s fortunes. Through their adept campaigning they consistently experience strong electoral success: since 1962, Liverpool has been the forefront of looking at new ideas and techniques to apply to the decades old community. Skills like desk top publishing, social media and knowing how to use CONNECT are all important, but without leadership and a determination to win, they are of only secondary value.
