The Environment Agency recently released updated figures for sewage discharges at all monitored points in England and Wales during 2024.
The figures showed that 3.6 million hours of sewage dumping took place last year. A slight increase on the previous year and the highest on record. Despite the talk of both Conservative and Labour Governments the sewage crisis is actually getting worse – while people are being hit with increased water bills.
This remains a huge and emotive issue.
The Rivers Trust have recorded information of sewage spills at each overflow point on their website. You can use their interactive map to view the sewage discharges in your areas, their durations and the water course that has been polluted. This provides some excellent local data for you to localise your campaign.
The rivers trust map also records data for previous years – so you can monitor if sewage dumping is getting worse in your council area.
ALDC has produced some updated templates and resources, so you can continue to campaign on this major issue in your local area.
