Only one principal council by-election was held yesterday. The contest in Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen ward resulted in a comfortable Labour hold, with Plaid Cymru finishing 483 votes behind in second place. No Liberal Democrat candidate was fielded.

However, there was Liberal Democrat success on Winsford Town Council last night, with Lib Dem candidate Bev Theron winning the by-election in Wharton ward by a majority of 76 votes with 56.6% of the vote, securing a gain from Labour.

More by-election action is guaranteed next week as there will be six principal council by-elections held across England and Scotland. Trevor Pouile will be the Liberal Democrat candidate in Southborough North contest in Tunbridge Wells (BC), with Rosaline Janko standing for the party in Maidstone’s Fant ward. Mo Hussain will be the Lib Dem candidate in Leith Walk ward’s double election in Edinburgh (UA), with Jane Davidson standing in Midlothian West. No Lib Dem candidate will be fielded in Blackheath ward’s by-election in Sandwell (MB).

Alongside the principal council contests, Shani Smith will be hoping to make a gain off Labour for the Liberal Democrats in St Mary’s ward in Barwell (PC).
