G8 is the funding stream in the Liberal Democrats to help win local elections. The money is provided by the Federal Party and the three state parties (England, Scotland and Wales), and administered by ALDC.
G8 will be running two funding streams for the 2020 local elections in England.
(a) Strategic Grants – these will be made to councils where we have the chance to take control or become the largest party, and for places with all-out elections either as a result of boundary changes or because they are new unitary authorities.
The G8 Committee will contact these places directly – there is no application process.
(b) Ward Level Grants
G8 is looking to support wards in 2020 that are either:
- Realistic prospects of gains.
- A difficult defence of an existing Lib Dem seat.
Criteria for G8
To be eligible for a G8 grant you must:
- Have a candidate in place in the ward you are applying for.
- Have a campaign plan in place for the ward – this should include both literature and canvassing.
- Be intending to run a full slate of candidates in your council area.
What you will receive
To make the best use of the money available the main support provided will be through direct mail to ‘squeeze’ voters. Experience has shown us that an extra squeeze mailing is the most effective way to bolster your campaigns.
The mailing will arrive in the in two drops – the second will fall shortly before the start of the regulated campaign period so there are no implications for your local spending limit. You will need to provide the artwork and address data and ALDC will do the rest.
The deadline for applications is 9am on Friday 10 January 2020.
Local Election Appeal 2020
ALDC’s Local Election Appeal Fund is funded entirely through generous donations from our members and supporters. The amount of grant we can make will be dependent on the amount of money we raise.
Local Election Appeal grants are made in the form of a direct mail (usually to postal voters) – again, this would be in advance of the regulated spending period.
- The candidate must be an ALDC member and the person making the application for Local Election Appeal funding must be a ALDC member.
- We will not usually support more than two wards per local authority.
- The deadline for applications is 9am on Friday 10 January 2020.
We will be in touch shortly afterwards to let you know if your application has been successful.
How to apply
To make things easier, we are using a single form for both G8 and the Local Election Appeal. Please use this form to apply.
You will need to make a separate application for each ward (including multi-member wards), so it may be easier to save answers as you go along and paste these into the next application if you are applying for multiple wards.
NB You will also be asked to upload a campaign plan (covering literature and canvassing from 1 January 2020) – we’re looking for one side of A4, a PDF would be ideal.
Please note that these grants are only available for local elections and not for the Police and Crime Commissioner, mayoral or London Assembly elections.
