Over 125,000 children face missing out on a secondary school place by 2022/23, a report by the Local Government Association has found.
The report warns that 49% of councils across the country are at risk of being unable to meet rising demand for secondary school places within the next five years.
Layla Moran MP, Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson, commented:
“It’s a disgrace that thousands of pupils are set to miss out on a secondary school place in their local area.
“At a time in their lives when children should be at a cross-roads, too many are facing a road-block instead.
“The Conservatives have got completely the wrong priorities.
“Millions of pounds have been wasted on free schools that have already closed, while parents struggle to get a place for their child at a local school.
“The government must urgently invest in providing the extra school places the country so desperately needs.”
