Housing White Paper a missed opportunity, say LGA Lib Dems

The Government have published their Housing White Paper and the LGA response can be found here.

Cllrs Keith House, LGA Lib Dem lead member on the Environment, Economy, Housing and Transport Board, said:

“The White Paper is tinkering round the edges of the planning system and a missed opportunity to help councils achieve the homes we need.”

Cllr Adele Morris, LGA Lib Dem Group Housing Spokesperson added: “Once again the government have failed to show any movement on the housing borrowing cap being lifted and we oppose the threat of Right to Buy on affordable homes being built through council companies.”

Other comments about the White Paper include:

  • There are lots of initiatives that will only nudge up housing supply rather than meet housing need;
  • We welcome a consultation on establishing a process for more transparency in establishing housing need;
  • We support increased planning fees – but these should be locally set to cover costs;
  • There has been a failure to really support councils in tackling stalled sites and there is a need to give support to councils developing homes of all tenures to meet the gap between supply and need
