Who controls where?

posted: 31/10/2008 15:19:42

Each year the local elections are followed by an often draWho controls where No 45matic round of negotiations in the many councils in “no overall control” (NOC) to sort out who will run the administration for the following year. The variety of agreements that are hammered out from formal pacts, coalitions and power sharing agreements, to informal agreements, “sit on your hands “ or rainbow administrations demonstrates that UK politics has plenty of experience in dealing with the situations where one party does not have overall control. A lesson that may be very relevant after the next general election!

ALDC has again recorded these administrations in its annual publication “Who controls Where?” available to download here for ALDC members

2009 Election Details Confirmed

Parliament has now approved the Statutory Instrument which moves the date of the 2009 local elections to 4 June 2009.

There are some additional points to note:

- The by-election cut-off date remains at 7 November 2008 for seats fought next June (ie a vacancy occurring in a division that will elect on 4 June 2009 that occurs after 7 November 2008 will not result in a by-election).

- Cornwall's elections have been postponed until October 2009. There will be no Mayoral election in Stoke-on-Trent following the referendum which has abandoned the directly elected Mayorality.

- The Government will be bringing further recommendations regarding potential unitaries in Devon and Lowestoft in December 2008, it will then consider whether this has any impact on the 2009 elections in these areas.

- The European Elections will be counted on a Local Authority basis, not Parliamentary Constituency basis.  That includes the issuing of PVs within that area.

LibDig launched

Found something interesting on the internet? Now you can easily share it with other Liberal Democrats with the new http://LibDig.co.uk site.

It uses the Liberal Democrats Account (LDA) system, so you don't need to register a new username or remember a different password. You can either post up content you have seen, or vote on content that other people have posted up; either way it’s a way of saying, “I found this interesting. I think you’ll find it interesting too.”

It only lets Liberal Democrat members post content or vote on content which is up there. Like many other party services, LibDig uses the Liberal Democrats Account (LDA) system, so if you have an LDA username and password, you can start using the site straight away without having to go through a new registration process or having to remember a new username and password. If you can't remember your LDA username or password, you can sort this with the options in the left-hand menu on http://login.libdems.org.uk

LibDig also comes with a “bookmarklet”. This is a shortcut you can add to your web browser’s favourites menu so that if you come across something interesting on the internet that you would like to share, all you need do is select this shortcut from your favourites menu. It makes the whole process very quick and easy. You can get the bookmarklet from http://libdig.co.uk/page/widgets.html. On the site itself, you can see the most popular items posted to it, those which are recently gaining in popularity (“upcoming”) and vote (“dig”) to make an item more popular. There is also now a shortcut to the site in the party's free web browser toolbar, which you can get from http://liberaldemocrats.ourtoolbar.com

The site has been produced by Ryan Cullen, a party member who has created a string of tools that have been very popular within the party, including most notably Liberal Democrat Blogs (www.libdemblogs.co.uk) – thank you Ryan!
