Lib Dems Liberal Democrats have burst the bubble of Tory euphoria on the eve of their party conference in Birmingham says Party President Simon Hughes MP.
On Thursday, in by-elections in the London Borough of Camden and Wealden, East Sussex, Liberal Democrats won two seats from the Conservatives. In Camden, long-time Hampstead resident, businesswoman and leading member of the Chinese Liberal Democrats Linda Chung won seat of Hampstead Town from the Conservatives with a majority of 128. In Wealden, local campaigner and former councillor Andy Watkins overturned a Conservative majority of 430 on a swing of 23%.
The Liberal Democrats’ win in Camden came in Labour’s Hampstead and Highgate constituency, currently held by Glenda Jackson and targeted by the Liberal Democrats as a gain at the next election.
Commenting on the wins, Liberal Democrat Federal President Simon Hughes said: “This week’s local elections show a clear 2-0 victory for the Liberal Democrats over the Conservatives. “In both central London and rural Sussex, real votes in real seats will burst the bubble of Tory euphoria in the midst of this year’s fevered conference season. “Liberal Democrats are not only holding their ground but are making advances – against Conservatives and Labour in the North, the Midlands and the South.”

ALDC has a limited supply of the Campaign Pack for Nick Clegg's "Million Door Challenge".
About the Million Door Challenge
More people than ever feel alienated by the political process in Britain today. To many it doesn't seem to matter who runs the country – nothing ever changes. Gordon Brown has been a disaster. There is little enthusiasm for a return to Conservative rule. Nick Clegg's Liberal Democrats are the only party who can reach out to these people.
The best way to engage with people is to go and talk to them. That's why Nick Clegg is setting his party the challenge of knocking on one million doors and talking to millions of people between October 2008 and June 2009.
The campaign
The Campaigns Department has produced a campaign pack to support local parties to achieve the Leader's goal of knocking on one million doors between September 2008 and June 2009.
The pack is available from ALDC online today by credit and debit card. The pack retails at £10, however to cover the sheer size and weight of the packs, had to make that £13, in addition to the regular 20% postage you pay orders just to cover the postage.
Please let us Know how you get on!
It would be great if you could at the same time encourage people to take part in the campaign and get out knocking on doors, reminding them of the email to send info back to - onemilliondoors@libdems.org.uk .

The nominations for ALDC's 2008-2009 Management Committee have now closed, and the Returning Officer has declared that the following nominations have been received and accepted. As the correct number of nominations for each post have been received there will be no ballot of members this year.
President: Cllr Mike Storey (Liverpool)
Chair: Cllr Kath Pinnock (Kirklees)
Vice-Chairs (2): Cllr Paul Sample (Salisbury), Cllr Mike Ross (Hull)
Secretary: Cllr Sarah Boad (Warwickshire)
Treasurer: Mike Ward (Mole Valley)
Management Committee (10):
Jon Burden (Hammersmith and Fulham)
Cllr Stan Collins (Cumbria / South Lakeland)
Jean Crossland (South Lakeland)
Cllr Andrew Dakers (Hounslow)
Steve Hitchins (Islington)
Cllr Claire Hudson (Mendip)
Cllr Graham Knight (Mid-Sussex)
Cllr Adrian Smith (Hinckley and Bosworth)
Cllr Keith Whitmore (Manchester)
Cllr Willie Wilson (Perth and Kinross)
English Rep: David Hare (Wokingham)
No nominations were received for either Scottish or Welsh Reps, normally a co-option is made at the first meeting of the Committee after consultation with colleagues in Scotland and Wales.
There have been some changes this year, and thanks go to a number of members of the Committee who have moved on, or moved to different positions, after many years of service to the organisation:
Sarah Boad after a second period as Chair of the organisation - most recently as chair for the last four years. Sarah will now be the Secretary of the organisation. John Commons after four years as Vice-Chair, and also as a Management Committee member before that who is leaving the committee. Jean Crossland who has been our secretary for the last two years, and before that Treasurer for five years, who will now be serving as an ordinary member of the Committee. And Linda Forbes, leaving us after a number of years on the Committee.
